Biréli Lagrène

Biréli Lagrène is a French jazz guitarist whose virtuosity and stylistic versatility have made him a prominent figure in the global jazz scene. Born in 1966 in Soufflenheim, Alsace, France, into a Romani family steeped in musical tradition, Lagrène began playing guitar at the age of four. By seven, he was already improvising jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt, whose influence would shape his early musical development.

In 1980, at just 13 years old, Lagrène released Routes to Django: Live, earning immediate acclaim as a protégé of Reinhardt. He continued to explore and expand upon this foundation with subsequent albums such as Biréli Swing ’81 and Fifteen (1982), blending traditional gypsy jazz with his evolving voice.

As his career progressed, Lagrène ventured into jazz fusion and post-bop, drawing inspiration from artists like Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, and Jaco Pastorius. His collaborations with jazz luminaries—including Larry Coryell, Jaco Pastorius, Benny Carter, and Stéphane Grappelli—further honed his distinctive style.

In the 1990s, Lagrène returned to his gypsy jazz roots with albums such as My Favorite Django (1994) and Blue Eyes (1998), showcasing his deep connection to the genre. He continued to innovate with projects like the Gipsy Project, blending traditional swing with modern interpretations. His 2006 double album Djangology, featuring the WDR Big Band, and his 2022 solo release Solo Suites further exemplify his artistic evolution.

Throughout his illustrious career, Lagrène has received numerous accolades, including multiple Django d’Or awards and the prestigious Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres medal in 2012, recognizing his significant contributions to the arts. In 2023, he released Biréli Lagrène Plays Loulou Gasté, a tribute to the golden age of French song, further demonstrating his versatility and enduring passion for music.

Today, Biréli Lagrène continues to captivate audiences worldwide, seamlessly blending tradition with innovation, and solidifying his legacy as one of the most influential jazz guitarists of his generation.
